2-deck blackjack, also known as double-deck blackjack, is played with two decks and the dealer stands on a soft 17. The dealer deals the initial hand of two cards to the player face down. If the player hits after the original deal, their new card (or cards) will be dealt face up.

2-deck blackjack rules may be different from one casino to another. Make sure you are familiar with the rules and basic strategy, whether you are just out to enjoy a few hours of fun at a casino or you aspire to be a professional gambler.

Most blackjack players are oblivious to whether the dealer stands or hits on soft 17. Dealer stands on soft 17 was the standard rule in years past, but a growing number of casinos now require the dealer to hit on soft 17 (hands like Ace, 6). Not only do most players fail to recognize the difference, some believe that the hit on soft 17 rule works in their favor since the dealer will bust more often.

STANDING ON SOFT 17. The basic strategy for standing on soft 17 is simple: never stand! That’s right; you should never stand on soft 17 regardless of what the dealer’s upcard is. That might seem odd since most players believe that 17 is a good enough hand on which to stand. You can always tell whether a casino has the soft 17 rule or not by reading the wording on the table layout. If it reads “Dealer Must Stand on all 17’s” it means the dealer will stand on soft 17. If instead it states “Dealer Hits Soft 17”, it means the dealer will hit soft 17. What happens to the odds when the soft 17 rule is in effect? For example, in some games, the dealer must stand on a Soft 17, that is, an Ace, plus any combination of cards equaling 6. This is called a “Stand 17” game. In other games, the dealer must hit on any Soft 17. This is called a “Hit 17” game. Also, in Europe and commonly in Canada, dealers do not have a hole card. At 17 points or higher the dealer must stay. (At most tables the dealer also hits on a 'soft' 17, i.e. A hand containing an ace and one or more other cards totaling six.) You are betting that you have a better hand than the dealer. The better hand is the hand where the sum.

Some casinos require dealers to stand on any hand that is worth a total of 17 points, whether soft (made up of an Ace counted as 11 plus a Six) or hard (a face card plus a Seven). If this rule applies, it will be indicated on the blackjack table layout, which will state: “Dealer Must Stand on all 17.”

Soft

If the dealer is not required to stand on all 17, the table layout will say: 'Dealer Hits Soft 17.' In such a case, the dealer may hit whenever he or she has 17 consisting of an Ace together with a Six. When this rule is followed, it results in a slightly higher edge for the house.
